Then there was the Capital Hash House Harriers . . . courtesy of Ewor, CH3 Founder

Ewor had hashed for 3 years with the Hong Kong HHH 1976-79 and then went on to found the Beijing HHH (which celebrated their 1000th run in 2002 with Squatter [the Beijing HHH RA], JR, D2HD, Fur balls and EWOR taking part in the festivities). On returning to Canberra in 1980, he ran with the Canberra HHH and found the experience wanting.

He talked with others of similar ilk, namely Peter Wildey (working with AIDAB at the timed later to become AusAID) and Shane Carroll from External Affairs, later to become Foreign Affairs and then as we all know it now, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

On Monday 22 February 1982, Capital Hash House Harriers had their first run, from as we all know it now “The first BBQ spot in Weston Park”. Most had not hashed before and were not named as yet. The 18 brave hashers arrived at the inaugural run site and in alphabetical order those faithful harriers were:

  • JOHN BARKER (JB)
  • TONY BEECHER (GUNNA)
  • BOB BLISS (HE’S GOT A BIG FAT GUT BUT HE’S ALRIGHT)
  • SHANE CARROLL ( XMAS LATER TO BECOME THE SHEIK)
  • DAVID CONNOLLY
  • MIKE FOGARTY
  • JOHN GENDERS (LATER TO BECOME WILDMAN)
  • ANDREW GUGEL
  • MIKE GUGEL
  • GORDON HALTON
  • COLIN ROBERTSON
  • BRIAN ROWE (EWOR)
  • PAUL RYAN (PORKY)
  • MAL SKELLY
  • TREVOR SPRING
  • TERRY TSIKLEAS (TESTICLES)
  • PETER VARDOS
  • PETER WILDEY (LATER TO BECOME JULIUS MARLOWE)

After downing heaps of West End (no booze bus then) the first Committee was sworn (the operative word) in:

  • GRANDMASTER: EWOR
  • HON SEC: PETER WILDEY
  • SCRIBE: JOHN BARKER
  • HASH CASH: SHANE CARROLL
  • RELIGIOUS ADVISOR: PAUL RYAN
  • HASH HORN: BOB BLISS (LATER TO LOSE IT SWIMMING ACROSS THE MURRUMBIDGEE RIVER)

Our scribe John Barker designed the Hash logo with some help from Shane (XMAS) Carroll. It then changed again on run No 24 and has remained that way as it is today.
